Brian Smith leads TreeSwing, a mobile-oriented brokerage service incubated by DST Market Services. The goal of TreeSwing is to bring the benefits of mutual fund investing to new and emerging investors by lowering the financial, behavioral, and emotional barriers to entry.
Prior to TreeSwing, Brian led Design and User Experience for DST's Business Process Solutions division where he worked on business-to-business products and services for financial, insurance, healthcare, and cable television clients in the US and UK. Using a mixed methods research approach, including user-centered and activity-centered design methodologies, he strove to balance the needs of business with the emotional needs of people.
Brian has been a mentor in Rockhurst University's Mensch Management Summer Program and was profiled in “Meet the New Hybrid Designers” in Design Management Review’s Design and Business Transformation issue.
During his career, Brian has worked as an adjunct professor, technical writer, software architect, web developer, and design researcher. His interests include design for social good, collaborative communities, and technology in emerging markets. He holds an MA in Design Management from the University of Kansas and an MA in English from Kansas State University.
